Mimi Dwyer

I'm a journalist and documentary filmmaker.

I’ve written for The New York Times, Reuters, Vice News, and other outlets, and I've developed and produced documentaries and docuseries for HBO and Vice News. My producing credits include the series Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God (HBO, 2023) and the Emmy-nominated film The Perfect Weapon (HBO, 2020).

As a journalist, I cover domestic news in the west, and have  I have been the U.S.-Mexico border correspondent for Reuters News and an investigative reporter and producer with Vice News Tonight on HBO. At Vice, I was part of teams that won Emmys for two projects: Zero Tolerance, about family separation, and Moment of Truth, about Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony during Brett Kavanaugh’s Senate confirmation hearings. My work has also been recognized by the Front Page Awards and New York Press Club.

I’ve worked on projects spanning migration, tech, education, policing, business, labor, housing, and culture, all with an investigative lens and an eye towards character.

I am currently directing and producing an independent feature documentary and collaborating as a reporter and producer on news, documentary, and editorial projects. I also edit writing on a freelance basis. I love leading projects and teams from the earliest stages of development to delivery.

For fun, I co-write the Famous Recurring Newsletter, a weekly roundup of Los Angeles cultural events, with Lois Beckett. Please subscribe.
